Two Adventures planned for February

Friday February 3rd from 11A.M. all day until 10P.M. PANDA EXPRESS on BEST AVE will be hosting a fundraiser for American Heritage Wildlife Foundation. Enjoy a great meal and 20% of the proceeds will benefit your local wildlife rehabilitation organization! Please go to our website to print out your flyer - this must accompany your order for our group to qualify.

Friday February 17th to kick start the Great Backyard Bird Count event we are giving a presentation at the Clark Fork Library 10 AM and the Sandpoint Library 1 PM. We will give general information of the common species you are most likely to see this time of year. This is a free event and we will have printouts of the data collection forms. The Great Backyard Bird Count information can be viewed at www.gbbc.birdsource.org.

Recovering Patients

The two patients recovering this winter with us are a male Raccoon and a Mourning Dove.
The dove had a broken wing that healed incorrectly but we were hopeful that it could adapt to re-learn how to fly. Progress has been made with lift, distance and landings. The wing is still not able to extend fully so we are looking for areas where other Doves that do not migrate. We plan a release in the spring. Currently the bird is being kept in our heated room animal infirmary and therapy is done daily.
The Raccoon is quite a character. Daily he is provided a variety of enrichment opportunities such as scents inside boxes suspended, or eggs inside tire swings, etc. He is kept in an very large enclosure that has limited exposure to humans. We want to keep him as wild as possible and make sure he does not get acclimated to humans. We are planning to release this spring near a fishing hole with lots of crawdads!

As the year draws to a close, I sit back and reflect on the wonderful people that have stepped up and helped out and the injured and orphaned wildlife that we were able to help. Thank you for your help in 2011 and I hope you all find it in your hearts to help us in the coming year. Merry Christmas from the Board of Directors and the two recovering wild animals still in care.

Diana Clemons Concert

Sunday October 16th at 1PM until 4PM we will be at Mom's Cafe in Clark Fork Idaho.

A HUGE thank you to who have helped AHWF over the past 10 years. We began as a dream and have slowly grown. I think back to the all our progress...creation of the animal room and the subsequent expansions. The flight barn yard expansion and the recent flight yard enclosure, the Raccoon enclosure, the website, the social media links, all the public relation events, the summer camp, the 10 year lease of 1 acre, etc. All this was made possible through private donations and grant funders like Foley-Frischkorn Wildlife Trust (Key-Bank), International Osprey Foundation, Whittenberger Foundation, Community Trust (PSB). Now I am excited to announce the possibility of opening the Nature Center Building. We have been given the option to purchase the building at a very reasonable rate. Ask how you can make this a reality too!

We have two flying squirrels being cared for now as well as one male raccoon. Each requires daily care which includes fresh produce...if you can help us with their care - Thank You!

Owls and Garage Sale

These little Saw-Whet Owls are such a delight! Their silent flight, nocturnal abilities and tenacity...in an effort to help us fund their nutritional needs (as well as other patients) we must have occasional fundraisers. Saturday May 28th at the Hope Memorial Community Center we will be having a 'garage sale'. Please stop by and find out more about our cause and perhaps you will find some things you must own! Thank you for the support.

Western Meadowlark

Our first patient of 2011 has arrived. A beautiful Western Meadowlark. The poor thing was so scared and shocky and the first 24 hours are the most critical. This morning our feathered friend was at its food bowl having some breakfast, so we are cautiously optimistic.
We are planning the release of our wintered over Merlin Hawk. She is finally fit enough for release. Keep your fingers crossed for wonderful weekend weather both this and next as the Highway cleanup is scheduled for the 30th.

Nuisance Animal Presentations

April 14th 6PM in Sandpoint at the East Bonner County Public Library and April 16th 1PM in Clark Fork at the Public Library I will be speaking about helpful tips on living peacefully with our native neighbors. Find out how to keep deer out of the garden, bats out of your house, raccoons from under your shed and much more. Hope to see you there.

Illustrated Children's Book benefits AHWF

Hello everyone!
The second illustrated storybook has been published by Publish America. You can purchase it from them directly or go to the AHWF.ORG website and follow the link. All proceeds benefit the efforts of wildlife rehabilitation and communiy education.
This story - Logger's Return, the continuing adventures of our white tailed deer friend - is about the adventures he faces and the friends he meets when he enters the national forest.
A third story book has been written and illustrated which also includes activity pages! We are awaiting word from the publisher.

February Update

The Merlin Hawk is doing well. Still recovering from her wing trauma. She is consuming a quail each day.
The School carnival went well.
The Vegan potluck gathering was a wonderful experience.

December Animal Update

December has been a good month for the animals. The Rock Pidgeon was able to be released next to the building where it's family was living. That was pretty awesome. It was such a cutie with the part down and part feathers when it first arrived. The Merlin Hawk is progressing well. She has been moved to the large flight barn. Her appetite is increasing, and her wings continue to improve. Can't wait until she is strong enough to be released!

Tenth Year of Existence

SUCCESS! ANIMALS RELEASED!

This summer/fall has brought joy to the foundation, as we were able to have several successful releases. August brought the release of Least Flycatcher's, Bank Swallows, and a Black Headed Grosbeak, which had all been rehabed into our surrounding area in the Clark Fork River Valley near Clark Fork, Idaho. In early October we were able to release a brother and sister tree squirrel back into their native habitat near the Clark Fork River in Northern Idaho. So Summer and Fall were exciting times, as we look forward to winter coming and the slowing of our animal intake. But what doesn't ever slow down is our need for donations to assist in our ongoing efforts!

looking to recruit help

Hello everyone,
Busy with babies here - feeding every 15 minutes for 15 hours each day.
We have the summer camp rescheduled to accomodate some students but still have space for more - don't hesitate to call and get more information.
Also we are looking for help setting up the awareness booth at the long-bridge swim August 7th. Ideally we could use at least three volunteers. Help us spread the word and offer the swimmers a good send off! Thanks for the help.
